Genretwisting Bingo Challenge
Apr. 12th, 2011 03:05 pmilthitThis is the sign-up post - sign up to receive a genre bingo card by commenting with your choice of the three types of cards available (see below).
Sign-ups remain open until July 1, 2011. Amnesty period begins on October 1, 2011.
Instructions:
1. Sign up to receive a card.
2. Write fics in any of the following patterns: Line through the middle (can be diagonal), blackout (all fics) or cross (diagonal or horizontal-vertical), to get a winner badge.
3. Post fic and/or links to the comm. (Comm posting guidelines here.) Tag with "bingo round 1" as well as other relevant tags.
4. Comment back here with your winning pattern to receive a winner badge.
Note #1: I say "fic", but art or fanvids etc. are also perfectly eligible as fills.
Note #2: The minimum word count of a fill fic is 500 words.
Note #3: Some genres don't have a lot more subgenres than 9, so the cards are bound to look a lot alike. I'm always open to new subgenre suggestions and/or genre definition discussion.
Card types
All cards will be 3x3.
1. The card will be a mix of all kinds of subgenres. All your fandoms will have to come from some other genre than the one indicated by the square, so no "space opera" fic for the Star Wars fandom (this is a genretwist challenge, after all).
2. You name a genre, and receive a card that has subgenres only from that particular genre.
3. You name a genre, and receive a card that has subgenres from all genres except that one.
Note: Genres are grouped as action/adventure, crime/thriller, fantasy, drama, horror, humor, romance and science fiction - so you could ask for a card with just romance, or any genre but sci-fi if you only want to write Star Wars. My interpretation of sub-genres can be a little loose, but they are also open to discussion.

Subgenre and Bingo Challenge questions.

Most of you know what bingo challenges are about: You sign up for a "bingo card" or prompts and write a series of stories to fill prompts so that you get a line through the middle. Our bingo cards would be composed of subgenres, such as "cyberpunk", "regency romance" or "20th century military adventure".
There's a few ways to do this so that there still is the element of genretwist:
1. Issue cards with a mix of all kinds of subgenres, with the understanding that you should write each as a twist - so no Star Wars fic for the "space opera" prompt, for example.
2. Issue cards that specifically exclude a given genre so that the player can still write all prompts in their main fandom (so, a card with no sci-fi genres for someone who only wants to write Stargate: Atlantis).
3. Issue cards that are a mix of subgenres for one particular genre alone (for example, a card of nothing but sci-fi prompts for a fan of Harry Potter and Leverage).
What do you think? Too difficult? It would always be possible to issue all three kinds, as per the player's choice.
Item #2: Below the cut I've tentatively separated subgenres by, hum, overgenre into action/adventure, crime/thriller, fantasy, drama, horror, humor and science fiction, with some subgenres appearing in more than one category. I'd appreciate feedback on this as well as suggestions of subgenres that aren't included here. They can be non-literary subgenres as well - well, obviously as long as they don't refer to a specific fiction-excluding format, such as "video remixing" or "classic sculpture". (I should point out that you can totally post genretwisting fanvids and art here as well, we just don't want to exclude fic.) Got any suggestions/corrections for me?
